Three Great Cedars
The three giant Cedar trees found inside the grounds of Oiwa Shrine are the tallest trees in Hitachi City and are officially recognised as a Natural Monument. The three trees are also sometimes referred to as the 'Sacred Trees of Hitachi' and the 'Tengu Cedars'. Tengu are spirits from Japanese folklore and it is said that these spirits used to live in these giant Cedars.
The giant cedars are located immediately after the entrance to the shrine grounds making them impossible to miss!

Oiwa Shrine is located at the foot of Mt. Oiwa, which is said to be the oldest sacred mountain in Hitachikukoku. It is one of the 100 sights of Ibaraki, and is overwhelmed by the majestic atmosphere of tall trees that line the sky. You can see how the atmosphere changes when you step into the torii. A short walk from there, you can see the sacred tree, Sanbonsugi. This cedar was selected as one of the 100 Forest Giants by the Forestry Agency and is said to be the largest in Hitachi City. Moreover, it has a strange shape that is divided into 3 cedars about 3 meters from the ground. You can feel the strength that gives you vitality. Go through the tower gate in front of it and proceed to the back, where the shrine of Oiwa Shrine stands with its dignity.
